Volunteer in Focus: Marina Tiukhtii

In early 2023, as spring was only timidly beginning to bloom, Marina left Odesa, Ukraine. The war, which had kept her in constant tension for so long, finally forced her to make this difficult decision. With one small suitcase, holding only a fraction of her past life, and a heart full of anxiety and hope, she landed in Dublin.

The first few weeks were a blur. Everything was new: the language she’d only heard in films, driving on the left, the unfamiliar rainy weather. But the biggest challenge was the feeling of being cut off from everything she knew. Marina settled in Carrickmacross, a small Irish town known for its beauty, quiet, and peacefulness. She was provided with accommodation, and the local residents met her with unexpected warmth and understanding. They offered help with documents, suggested where to buy groceries, and simply listened to her stories when she needed to talk. The town’s tranquility became a true comfort after all she had been through.

Marina quickly realized she needed to find work to feel useful and independent. It wasn’t easy, as she had to adapt to a new culture, business etiquette, and even the accent. However, thanks to her persistence and the support of volunteer organizations, she managed to find temporary work at a small local company. This was an important step that allowed her not only to earn money but also to integrate into the new environment and feel part of something larger.

Beyond work, Marina actively sought ways to contribute and feel connected to her new community. She began volunteering, helping to clean the town and look after the flowers. Her love for flowers had been with her since childhood, and this activity brought her immense joy. Soon, she even had a small garden where she happily grew her favorite plants, creating a cozy corner that reminded her of home.

Every day brought something new. Marina learned English, connected with new people, and discovered Ireland’s history and traditions. She started attending Irish dance classes, which helped her not only distract herself from worrying thoughts but also feel like a part of the new community. Of course, longing for home, for loved ones, and for her old life sometimes washed over her with renewed force. News from Ukraine continued to be a concern, but Marina tried to focus on the present and build her future.

By the end of 2023, Marina felt much more confident. Ireland had become for her not just a refuge, but a new home where she was gradually rebuilding her life. She understood that the journey would be long and challenging, but she had support, new friends, and the belief that even after the darkest days, dawn always comes.
